This is our third year hosting this show and these artists never cease to amaze us with their enthusiasm and talent.  The class, led by Ms. Deb Tisdale, expects the students to produce a minimum of 40 works of art in a variety of media, techniques, and subject matter. Emphasis is placed on drawing from observation, the application of color and design principles, the development of a body of work that is of the student’s own choosing, and application of critique process in written and oral form. The class is time intensive and demands concentrated effort both within and outside of scheduled class time.  Most works will be for sale and the students are responsible for organizing and setting up for the show.

The Artists of Rubber City 18th Annual Juried Show opens Saturday, May 17, with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. at Mocha Maiden Gallery, 17 – 19 Maiden Lane. Awards will be announced at 3 p.m. 

Start your afternoon early by visiting Summit Artspace to view Off the Wall – eight sculptors, curated by DonParsisson and attend the Fanciful Wire Sculpture Workshop with Mark Jaroszewski which starts at 1:00. This workshop is free, but registration is advised (email psargent@neo.rr.com)

Creative Jewelry Design, with Jane Pollock, Wednesdays, June 11 and 18, 2008, from 6:30 till 8:30 pm.  While exploring the creative process, we’ll manipulate the metal with tools as well as our hands and come to know techniques used in fabrication as well as the finishing process.  Jane will provide some fabulous basic materials, additional available for purchase. COSE Arts Business and Innovation Awards - finalists announced. Event Thursday 5/15

COSE’s (Council of Smaller Enterprises) Arts Network will recognize the entrepreneurial risks taken by both artists and small businesses at the COSE Arts Business and Innovation Awards on Thursday, May 15, from 6 – 9 pm at Park Lane Villa in University Circle.

Thirty-six artists, galleries, arts organization and arts-based businesses from around the region applied for the three categories of Arts Business and Innovation Awards.

·        The Cleveland Arts Prize Shared Category recognizes an artist who has already been recognized for the caliber of work through receiving an Arts Prize, and they have also shown a commitment to sustaining their careers through sound business practices. This year’s finalists are: Groundworks Dancetheater (dancer/choreographer David Shimotakahara), author Mary Doria Russell, composer Loris Chobanian, poet George Bilgere, and photographer Linda Butler.

·        The Artist Entrepreneur category recognizes an artist, arts group or arts based business who has demonstrated a commitment to sustaining their career in the arts through sound business practices. This year’s finalists are: Interactive Works of Art (artist Melissa Daubert), Prelude2Cinema (film maker Alex P. Michaels) Peninsula Arts Academy, Fairplay Stonecarvers (artists Nick Fairplay and Elizabeth Meadows), and TAP Studios/Gallery M (jewelry artist Todd Powmell).

·        The Business Patron Category is an honorary award which recognizes businesses for engaging in creative partnerships that have benefited the local arts community. The Business Patron Category winners have already been selected. This year’s winners are: Studio Graphique, for their Art of Space exhibit and auction, and ZeroLandfill, for their commitment to connecting artists and arts educators with recycled materials from interior design firms.

Riverfront Celebrates Grand Opening of New Art Gallery

City Art Project, the organization behind The Redlight Art Galleries in Akron, is celebrating the grand opening of their second gallery,located in Riverfront Mall near the amphitheater and fountain at 2091 Front Street, on Friday May 9th from 5:30p.m. - 10:00p.m.

Robert Breitenstine, a Senior from the University of Akron will be the featured guest artist of the evening, exhibiting his works of black and white photography.  Local singer-song writer, Rachel Roberts will be the featured musical guest. Read the rest of this entry »


AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER HOLDS FIRST AKRON SHOW

Gary Fossaceca, owner of the Waxing Moon Photography Studio in Ashland, Ohio, is holding his first show in Akron at the Mocha Maiden Gallery throughout the month of May.  

Mr. Fossaceca is a member of the Akron Area Arts Alliance whose photography has been featured in several exhibitions across the State.  His piece entitled “1966” won the juror’s award in the 2005 FAVA Six-State Photography Show and will be included in the Akron Show.  Samples of Mr. Fossaceca’s work can be seen at www.waxingmoonphoto.com

Mocha Maiden is located at 17 Maiden Lane in downtown Akron, #(330) 374-1114.   The gallery is free and open to the public.  Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM until 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM until10:00 PM and Saturday from 9:30 AM until 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM until close.  The gallery is closed on Sunday.
